Everyday Heroes

Cox Communications

Cox Communications Arizona is the recipient of this year's ESPN Good Sports Award for its "Everyday Heroes" initiative. The award is given annually to a project that generates outstanding community involvement through education and athletics.

As its sponsor, ESPN hopes this award encourages cable operators to promote teamwork, sportsmanship and education in their community-affairs programs.

Cox Arizona partnered with the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) to create Everyday Heroes, an event that recognizes character and honor in outstanding achievement both on and off the field among high school coaches, administrators, students and teachers. This two-hour, black-tie gala was hosted by Cable News Network's Daryn Kagan and televised live from the prestigious Orpheum Theater on Cox9 in greater Phoenix on May 31, 2003. The show was repeated on Cox9 in the weeks following the event.

Cox chose to partner with the AIA, which oversees all high school sports and activities in Arizona, so they could tap into the organization's strength and history in administering scholarship programs. Together, Cox and the AIA distributed over $40,000 in awards and scholarships to the evening's recipients.

Heavy promotion in the months preceding the event encouraged nominations for the "Everyday Heroes" awards. As a result, over 300 nominations were received for the 10 award categories, a 20% increase over expectations.

On the night of the event, statewide nominees, their guests, sponsors and other invited dignitaries and VIPs attended a gracious reception prior to the ceremony.

Throughout the night, talented high school students, selected from a local "talent contest," entertained more than 1,000 guests attending the event. As the "Everyday Heroes" awards were presented, recipients shared tears of joy, proud parents snapped photos, and teachers, coaches and school administrators were made to feel like the heroes they truly are.

The governor of Arizona even proclaimed May 31st as Everyday Heroes Day and presented all finalists with personalized letters. "Everyday Heroes" will now become an annual event.
