Report: S-A DVR Sales Soar in 2003

Scientific-Atlanta Inc. reached a market-share level of 25% for digital-video recorders in 2003, according to a report.
Strategy Analytics Inc.’s "Integrated DVRs Global Market Forecast" found that worldwide DVR sales totaled 2.7 million units in 2003.
The study found that S-A and direct-broadcast satellite provider EchoStar Communications Corp. tied for the market-share lead with 25% apiece, followed by Pace Micro Technology plc and Hughes Network Systems at 10% apiece and Motorola Inc. at 7%.
Strategy Analytics predicted that global annual sales of integrated DVRs will reach 27.6 million units by 2008, at an average annual growth rate of 59%. Satellite will remain the dominant platform, accounting for 15.5 million units, while cable will reach 10.7 million, the research firm added.
The report concluded that there will be 71.5 million DVR users worldwide by 2008.
