Sho Too to Offer Gay Block

As a possible precursor to the launch of a 24-hour gay-oriented network, Showtime Networks Inc. will create a weekly gay-themed programming block on its Sho Too multiplex channel.
Beginning May 22, Sho Too will premiere 'Night Out on Sho Too Wednesdays,' featuring gay-targeted movies and shows, as well as episodes from Showtime original series Queer as Folk, senior vice president of advertising and promotion Stephanie Gibbons said.
The block will also include rotating hosts that will introduce programming and appear in comedy sketches and other shoulder programming.
'We want to make this a platform for talented but relatively unknown performers to gain national exposure,' Gibbons said.
But she emphasized that the block -- which will also feature cult animated series Queer Duck -- is not tied to the proposed Viacom Inc.-produced Gay Channel, nor does it represent a potential makeover of the Sho Too service toward a more niche-targeted service.
Gibbons also said the network isn't considering a similar niche-targeted programming block for its African-American and Hispanic viewers.
