Former Cox Communications Inc. engineering executive vice president Alex Best was appointed to Optinel Systems Inc.'s board of directors Tuesday morning.
Optinel is a privately held optical-communications-systems provider working on a transport system that would facilitate the introduction of video-on-demand, interactive television and other new services at lower operating costs to cable-system owners.
Best worked at Cox for 14 years, retiring from the MSO in late 2000. He currently serves on the boards of Cable Television Laboratories Inc., Concurrent Computer Corp. and the Southern Cable Telecommunications Association.
'I'm excited by [Optinel's] proprietary technology, which offers significant price and performance improvements for cable operators. Among its unique capabilities are the ability to seamlessly interface with existing equipment and the ability to transport video and data in its native format,' he said in a prepared statement.
The company is based in Elkridge, Md., and it is expected to showcase its product in some capacity at the National Show next month in New Orleans.
