Harmonic Backs ACOM Launch

Sunnyvale, Calif.-Harmonic Inc. said last week that its "TRANsend" digital platform has been deployed by ACOM, Brazil's first digital-broadband fixed-wireless operator, in a wide-scale rollout of digital-television service in Brazil.
The service was successfully launched in three major cities in March, Harmonic said. Several other implementations are planned for this year.
TRANsend gives ACOM the flexibility to customize its digital-service offering, as well as to deploy standards-based conditional-access and set-top-boxes, the vendor said.
"Harmonic and ACOM have worked together to define and implement the optimal broadband architecture for our access network," ACOM president Paulo Areas said in a news release. "Today, we are providing our customers the immediate benefit of superior digital-television service. Tomorrow, we can quickly migrate the capabilities of the same Harmonic platform to provide an interactive digital-service offering."
TRANsend allows ACOM to receive satellite feeds at each of its sites, to create a customized program lineup and to then distribute this customized content to ACOM subscribers.
ACOM is a broadband fixed-wireless operator that holds frequencies in 40 cities in Brazil. It offers high-speed Internet access, digital pay TV and voice services to residential and corporate markets.
