Askey Tunes Up High-Speed Gear

Plano, Texas-Taiwan-basedAskey Computer Corp. has agreed to incorporateMicrotune Inc.'sDOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) and EuroDOCSIS-certified RF (radio-frequency) tuners across its line of cable-modem products.

Microtune's RF chips integrate cable tuner and receiver functions for analog and digital environments.

Askey, which plans to add Microtune's silicon-based tuners to its modems within the next 12 months, said the deal will allow it to expand the consumer market for high-speed data and voice-over-Internet protocol services. The companies also plan to collaborate on the commercialization of Microtune's next generation of tuners.

Microtune, which just completed a $64 million initial public offering, has similar relationships with 3Com Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. Com21 Inc. and Motorola Broadband Communications Sector.
