Judge Won’t Dismiss Cablevision Suit

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 8/22/2003 6:41:00 AM

A lawsuit by consumers challenging Cablevision Systems Corp.’s anti-piracy efforts will proceed.

Judge Joanna Seybert of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York spurned a motion by the MSO to dismiss the 11-month-old suit earlier this week.

Seven consumers sued the operator, alleging that its attempts to seek restitution from suspected signal thieves were tantamount to racketeering.

Cablevision pursued the individuals because company officials found their names on business lists seized in raids against set-top pirates.

A Cablevision spokesman refused to comment on the suit or on the most recent ruling.
