Three Cable Nets Win `duPont Awards'

By Simon Applebaum -- Multichannel News, 12/18/2002 11:59:00 AM

Three cable-network productions will be honored next month with "Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards," considered one of the top annual honors in broadcast journalism.

Home Box Office, CNN en Español and Courtroom Television Network were among the duPont winners announced Tuesday afternoon.

HBO's award is for In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01, the acclaimed documentary account of what transpired on that day, presented in May.

Cable News Network's Spanish-language service will get the first duPont ever for a non-English production, directed at an investigation into kidnappings and killings of Argentineans three decades ago.

A Court TV special on the 1971 prison riot in Attica, N.Y., and its aftermath is the third cable duPont winner. Court TV will share the honor with Lumiere Productions Inc., an independent company.

Cable became an element of the duPont awards in the mid-1980s. Until then, just broadcast-TV and radio programs and reporting was considered.

Normally, one or two cable programs are selected for duPont recognition.

The awards will be handed out at Columbia University Jan. 15, during a ceremony televised later on PBS.
