Gemstar Lands Time Warner Cable Deal

Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. signed a licensing deal with Time Warner Cable for its interactive-programming-guide product line.

The agreement not only allows Time Warner to roll out TV Guide IPG, but also contains a patent license that gives the MSO the ability to use parts of the IPG in other guides developed by the operator or outside vendors.

In Time Warner's Scientific-Atlanta Inc. systems, it carries S-A’s embedded "Sara" guide and "Passport" from Pioneer Electronics Corp. The MSO does, however, have a few Motorola Inc. markets, and Gemstar is the chief guide provider for that platform.

The agreement would allow Time Warner to include parts of Gemstar's guide, such as TV Guide On Demand, inside other guides. The two companies also said they would work together to develop and deploy IPG advertising.
