BET Online Auction to Benefit AIDS Charity

By Monica Hogan -- Multichannel News, 3/11/2002 11:39:00 AM

Black Entertainment Television said Monday that it will host an online charity auction starting next Monday, March 18, to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the African-American community.

BET and BET.com will enlist the support of celebrities to auction autographed or other exclusive memorabilia. Yahoo! Inc. auctions will conduct the bidding, which runs through Friday, May 3.

Funds will go to BET's 'Rap-It-Up' campaign and to the music industry's LIFEbeat organization, both of which seek to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Hip-hop artist Ja Rule will help to promote the auction through public-service announcements on BET.

In addition to Yahoo, the auction can be found next week at www.bet.com/rapitup.

Celebrities who have made contributions to the auction to date include Ja Rule, Brandy, Magic Johnson, Master P and Mary J. Blige.
