No Longer Keen on PVRs

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 6/7/2002 7:42:00 AM

Keen Personal Media Inc. has cut its staff significantly, and it is getting out of the personal-video-recorder sidecar business.

Parent company Western Digital Corp. said its Keen subsidiary laid off 39 staffers, leaving only a few key managers in place.

Keen provided the software to move content on and off the hard drives of PVRs inside Scientific-Atlanta Inc. 'Explorer 8000' set-tops, as well as pause, fast-forward and rewind software.

A Western Digital spokesman said Keen will still support the software in the S-A boxes, but it will focus on 'licensing arrangements, equity and marketing partnerships and other strategic alternatives' going forward.

Metabyte Networks Inc. will continue to supply its storage-management software to S-A for its Explorer 8000.
