Nine companies and individuals received '2001 Gilbert Community Service Awards' from the Cable Television and Telecommunications Association of New York recently.
The awards are named for the late Peter Gilbert, founder of Gilbert Media, and they recognize outstanding public-service programs by member operators in New York.
The winners were Mid-Hudson Cable and Adelphia Communications Corp. for self-initiated public-service programs; Time Warner Cable Massena and Cablevision Systems Corp. of New York City for joint public-service programs; Cablevision and VH1 for campaigns pairing operators with associate members; News 12 Long Island for investigative journalism; and New York 1 News for breaking news.
Laraine Mirabile of Staten Island Cable was named educator of the year. And Jeffrey Crocker of Adelphia's Niagara Falls system was given $5,000 and a plaque in recognition of his personal community service.
A special president's award was presented to Dr. Lee Whitmore of Cablevision for the creation of its 'Power to Learn' program.
