Cable's Primetime Ratings Soar 20%

Basic cable notched a nearly 20 percent rise in primetime household ratings during the second week of the new TV season, according to a Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau analysis of Nielsen Media Research.
From Oct. 1 through 7, basic cable averaged a 28.4 household rating in primetime, a 19.8 percent jump from the 23.7 rating recorded in the second week of the 2000-01 TV season spanning Oct. 9 through 15, 2000.
Over the same periods, cable's share grew 18.9 percent to a 46 from a 38.7, while the medium's delivery expanded 23.5 percent to 29.9 million households from 24.2 million.
On the broadcast side, five of the seven networks sustained primetime ratings hits: ABC fell 33.3 percent to a 6.8; CBS 16.7 percent to a 7.5; NBC 1.1 percent to an 8.9; Fox 30.6 percent to a 4.3; and The WB Television Network 7.1 percent to a 2.6.
Only United Paramount Network, which posted a 25 percent gain to a 3.5 average, saw ratings growth. Pax TV was flat at a 0.9.
