ESPN’s MLB Derby Off Like a Ratings Shot
Bristol, Conn.— Like a Miguel Tejada blast over the wall, viewership for ESPN’s coverage of the July 12 2004 Century 21 Home Run Derby skyrocketed 34% versus the 2003 event.
This year’s version, from Minute Maid Park in Houston, drew 5.04 million households, versus 3.76 million for last year’s contest from U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The corresponding 5.7 rating was up 33% versus last year’s 4.3.
Tejada of Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles set records for long balls in a round (15 in the second) and overall (27) in edging out Lance Berkman of the host city’s Astros.

Discovery to Simulcast 'Columbus’ in Spanish'
Silver Spring, Md. — The upcoming world premiere of the Discovery Channel documentary Columbus: Secrets from the Grave will be simulcast in Spanish on Discovery en Español.
The dual airing, slated for Aug. 1 at 10 p.m., will mark the first time Discovery Networks U.S. presents a Spanish-language simulcast, the programmer said last week.
The documentary will portray one historian and a team of scientists who use modern technology to launch a new effort to unmask Columbus’ true identity and the fate of his remains.
Among the questions the documentary will attempt to answer: Where was Columbus really from? Why did he keep his origins shrouded in mystery? Was he really Italian? Could he have been a pirate, a Jew fleeing from the Inquisition, or the illegitimate son of a Spanish aristocrat?
