By Karen Brown -- Multichannel News, 7/24/2003 10:52:00 AM

America Online Inc. has a new technical guru.

The Internet arm of AOL Time Warner Inc. named John McKinley chief technology officer and president of AOL Technologies. The CTO post is a new position.

McKinley, former CTO for Merrill Lynch & Co. and General Electric Capital Corp., will direct the company’s technical efforts, particularly as it delves into broadband. He will oversee product engineering, network infrastructure, data centers, internal business systems and computing. McKinley will report to AOL vice chairman Joe Ripp.

In a prepared statement, Ripp said McKinley was chose because of his reputation in the business world.

"In addition, John has helped some of the largest companies in the world to implement ambitious technological efforts while maintaining strong fiscal discipline," Ripp added. "I look forward to working closely with John as we help our members to take advantage of all of the Internet's potential as we enter the broadband world."
