TNT Wins Second Straight Month

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 2/25/2003 2:12:00 PM

Buoyed by Michael Jordan's final National Basketball Association All-Star Game appearance, Turner Network Television ran away with the primetime-household-ratings race for the month of February.

But Fox News Channel -- with a record 1.7 rating, finishing in a tie for third with Lifetime Television -- turned in the surprise ratings performance for the period of Jan. 27 through Feb. 23.

TNT's 2.1 rating bested Nickelodeon's 1.8 mark to finish first for the second straight month.

TBS Superstation and USA Network (tied with a 1.6 rating); Disney Channel (1.5); Cartoon Network (1.4); Cable News Network (1.1); and ESPN, Sci Fi Channel and The Learning Channel (all tied with a 1.0) rounded out the top 10, according to an ABC Cable Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research data.

Fox News' record-setting performance easily outpaced CNN's 1.1 rating during the month -- a period that saw primetime ratings for all cable news networks, sans CNBC, increase over last year's numbers.

TNT took top honors in delivering the most adults 18 through 49 and 25 through 54 in primetime and on a 24-hour basis during the month. TNT's sister service, TBS, finished second in both the aforementioned categories and time periods.

On a total-day basis, Nickelodeon remained at the top, posting a 1.6 mark, followed by Lifetime and TNT (tied with a 1.2); and Disney and Fox News (1.1).

TNT's Feb. 9 NBA All-Star Game, along with the event's pregame and postgame coverage, secured the top three program performances of the month, according to Turner Entertainment Research.

Fox News' Jan. 28 airing of President Bush's State of the Union address and its follow-up analysis coverage held the fifth and sixth spots, while The New TNN's World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. programming pinned down the seventh, ninth and 10th slots.

TBS' Feb. 2 airing of the movie The Patriot and USA's Feb. 11 coverage of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show finished fourth and eighth, respectively.
