A&E Goes Original with Dash of Reality

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 1/6/2004 1:39:00 PM

A&E Network is ramping up its original production for 2004 and beyond with a spate of new series steeped in reality that are in various stages of development.

Senior vice president of programming Bob DeBitetto outlined some of the network's programming plans at the Television Critics Association press tour in Hollywood Tuesday.

Four new primetime series are on the fast track with airdates slated this year.

Scheduled for a spring bow, Dearly Departed will exhume the inner workings of a San Diego funeral home. Others expected to bow before year's end: Family Forensics, in which forensic experts examine American homes for family secrets; The First 48, tracking homicide detectives on the case in Philadelphia; and Dog the Bounty Hunter, which looks at the lives of a husband-wife bounty team who also happen to have one-dozen kids.

A&E also noted that it has another six primetime shows in the development pipeline, including: Interventions, a documentary series in which people confront their fears and demons; Mr. Justice, in which detective Bill Stanton and his crew of investigators tackle real cases; and Mindhunter with John Douglas, a look at the original FBI profiler who has divulged the inner workings of some of America's notorious criminal minds.
