Level 3 Communications Inc. will provide the land link to Hughes Network Systems’ planned Spaceway broadband-satellite-Internet service, scheduled to launch in 2004.
The Broomfield, Colo.-based Internet-backbone-transport provider will supply the interconnect services between the Spaceway satellite service and the public Internet.
HNS is buying "(3)CrossRoads" Internet-access and "(3)Center Collocation" services from Level 3. HNS also plans to install several antennas directly on Level 3’s nationwide backbone, which reaches 62 markets in the United States.
"We chose Level 3 because the company's facilities and IP [Internet-protocol] services enable us to seamlessly and reliably connect to the public Internet and to integrate with other land-based local- and wide-area networks," said Mike Cook, Spaceway’s senior vice president and general manager, in a release.
Spaceway will use a Ka-band satellite-delivery system to reach business and residential customers with a two-way, high-speed-data service. The first satellite to support the system is scheduled to launch later this year.
