Discovery Communications Inc. and the British Broadcasting Corp. are producing a special two-hour, commercial-free program examining the roots of terrorism that will be simulcast on eight Discovery U.S. Networks and BBC America Wednesday night, the companies announced Monday.
Currently in production, Behind the Terror: Understanding the Enemy will premiere Sept. 19 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., then encore from midnight to 2 a.m. Sept. 20. An international broadcast is slated to air on Discovery networks in primetime around the globe Sept. 21.
The special, hosted by veteran news anchor Forrest Sawyer, will provide an in-depth profile of terrorism and the people behind it. The show aspires to take viewers behind the fear, anger and destruction to look at the evolution of terrorism and why last week's attacks were made against the United States.
A Discovery spokeswoman said Behind the Terror will intersperse news footage from last week's hijacking tragedies with archival materials from the BBC and Discovery.
At press time, the production was slated to include interviews with Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, ex-FBI director William Sessions and former United Nations ambassador Bill Richardson, the last man to negotiate with Afghanistan's Taliban ruling body.
In the States, Behind the Terror will air on Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Science Channel, Discovery Civilization Channel, Discovery Wings Channel and BBC America.
Abroad, the special is scheduled for primetime Sept. 21 on Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, People + Arts, Discovery Sci-Trek, Discovery Travel & Adventure, Discovery Civilisation and Discovery Wings.
From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 21, Discovery Channel and Discovery Health will present a special edition of Deadline Discovery focusing on the ongoing news and response to the horrific events in the United States. The show will encore from 11 p.m. to midnight that night.
Deadline Discovery will also air on eight of Discovery's international channels Sept. 21.
