Home & Garden Television started the new year off in fine fettle, opening 2003 with a network-record performance in primetime.
HGTV averaged a 0.9 household rating (743,000 homes) Dec. 31 through Jan. 5, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The results were boosted by a best-ever Friday (Jan. 3), when the Scripps Networks vehicle scored a 0.9, improving on its year-earlier comparison by 50 percent, according to the network.
Two airings of new show Design on a Dime helped matters. That series bowed Jan. 1, registering a 1.8 household rating, the highest series debut in the service's history.
Adding in a 3.0 average for its live coverage of The Tournament of Roses Parade New Year's Day, HGTV averaged a 0.6 in total day last week -- a number that equaled the network's best gauged on the 24-hour basis.
