Nick of Time for Basic Ratings

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 4/13/2004 12:24:00 PM

During the second week of the second quarter, Viacom Inc. services held the top two spots in household ratings in both primetime and total-day.

Nickelodeon averaged a 2.0 household mark April 5-11, ahead of the 1.8 recorded by sister service and channel-sharer Nick at Nite, according to an ABC Cable Networks Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research data.

Gauged on a 24-hour basis, Nick was first with a 1.7, 0.4 points better than the 1.3 recorded by the sitcom proponent.

The positions reflect a new division of the MTV Networks services, which are now being gauged as separate entities even though they share the same channel space. Nick’s primetime comprises nine hours, versus 12 for Nick at Nite and 21 for other network competitors.

Overall, Nick at Nite airs Sunday-Thursday from 9 p.m.-6 a.m. and from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Nick airs during the balance on the service save for weekdays from 6 a.m.-6:30 a.m., when Cable in the Classroom fare runs.

Turner Network Television ranked third in primetime last week, scoring a 1.7, ahead of USA Network’s 1.6. There was a three-way tie for fifth among Lifetime Television, Cartoon Network and Disney Channel, each of which notched 1.5 averages.

TBS Superstation and Fox News Channel each registered a 1.3, while ESPN and The History Channel -- the latter boosted by its highest-ever rating from the first installment of Home Box Office miniseries Band of Brothers -- rounded out the top 10 with 1.2 apiece.
Home & Garden Television had the best week in its history, notching a 1.0 average with 839,000 households -- 25% and 30% increases, respectively, over the same week a year ago.

ESPN’s coverage of the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship game April 6 between Connecticut and Tennessee was the total-sports network’s highest-rated hoops telecast ever and last week’s leader with a 4.3.

The second hour of Spike TV’s presentation of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. fare April 5 was second with a 4.0, while History’s Band of Brothers marched into third for the week with a 3.7 from 9 p.m.-10:25 p.m. April 11.
