WWFE Income, Revenue Fall
Stamford, Conn.— World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc. reported its revenue and net income were down 12 percent and 49.5 percent, respectively, for the second fiscal quarter.
The weaker numbers reflected softness in television ratings and pay-per-view buys. Revenue for the period was $98.2 million, down from $111.9 million last year, while earnings totaled $4.8 million (7 cents per share), compared with $9.5 million (13 cents per share) last year.
Pay-per-view buys fell to 1.2 million from 1.7 million during the quarter, as PPV revenue slipped to $22.2 million. Television advertising revenue also fell — to $20.9 million from $22.5 million.
NASCAR Assesses PPV Options
New York— The National Association for Stock Car Racing (NASCAR) is exploring pay-per-view opportunities for its national races, beginning as early as next year.
The circuit is looking at several PPV options, including offering different camera angles during its live 2002 races, sources close to the situation said.
"We're looking to understand the marketplace and looking into potential business models," NASCAR managing director of new media Jeffrey Pollack said, declining to provide specifics.
Copps: FCC Seeks to Block Porn
Washington— Democratic Federal Communications Commission member Michael Copps last Wednesday called on the agency to ensure that children do not see pornography on television.
In a short statement that accompanied the elimination of some FCC sex-channel rules, Copps said the FCC should "commence a proceeding" to determine what steps the agency can take to protect children from indecent and obscene programming.
Pioneer Ships New 3000 Box
Long Beach, Calif.— After months of development, Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc. last week said it has started to ship its latest digital set-top box for Time Warner Cable deployments.
The Voyager 3000 sports a Broadcom Corp. single-chip design, and is able to support infrared, uniform serial bus (USB), serial port and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 1394 FireWire connections to other home entertainment and computing devices.
