Thursday night’s 2003 MTV Video Music Awards was the highest-rated basic-cable show of the year among people aged 12 to 34.
The event - the 20th anniversary iteration, in which videos starring Coldplay, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé Knowles took three “moonman” statues apiece - averaged a 9.9 rating among the aforementioned demo from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 28.
However, that marked a 10.8% decline from the 11.1 rating the network scored for its 19th VMA program on Aug. 29, 2002.
The 20th VMAs was the highest-rated show in cable or broadcast that night, posting an 8.1 household mark, down from the 8.3 registered by the prior year's statuefest.
