OPA: Online Spending Rising

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 1/2/2003 11:30:00 AM

Consumers spent $361.4 million on online content during the third quarter of 2002, a 14 percent jump over the second quarter and a 105 percent jump over the prior-year span, according to data collected by the Online Publishers Association.

The personals/dating category zoomed to No. 1, accounting for $87 million during the third quarter, surpassing business/investing and entertainment/lifestyles. Those three categories account for 62 percent of all revenue.

Subscriptions accounted for $302 million of the $361 million in the quarter, the OPA said. Single purchases, or buys above $5, reached $56 million, while micropayments, or purchases under $5, totaled $3.1 million compared with $279,000 in the year-earlier period.
