ESPN to Kick Off NFL Season

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 3/3/2002 9:00:00 AM

In what would be a first for the network, ESPN is set to air the opening game of the 2002-03 National Football League season during a special Thursday-night Sept. 5 telecast.

Sources close to the situation said ESPN will air the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers game prior to the league's scheduled Sept. 8 Sunday-afternoon opening day.

The telecast is an addition to ESPN's annual 16-week NFL Sunday Night package.
