Special Report: 2002 Innovator Awards

By Staff -- Multichannel News, 11/10/2002 7:00:00 PM

Throughout the U.S., cable operators — along with the vendors and trade associations that work with them — have crafted unique ways to bring their products and services to some 72 million cable households.

For more than a decade, Cablevision (Multichannel News' former sister publication) recognized those companies through its annual Innovator Awards. Through an editors' choice process, Cablevision recognized groundbreaking corporate and local initiatives that set new milestones for industry excellence across an array of disciplines — including local programming, consumer marketing, technology, community service and outreach, business strategy and turning new media into mass media.

Until 2001, the Innovators were partnered with the annual Bill Daniels Operator of the Year Award.

With this issue, Multichannel News picks up the Innovators mantle and — now, as these honors are bestowed for their 12th year — offers the awards a showcase of their own. As with the Operator of the Year supplement published on Sept. 30, the publication is different, but the mandate remains the same.

This year, Multichannel News honors Innovators in nine areas: Comcast Corp. for business strategy; Insight Communications Co. chairman and CEO Michael Willner as industry image maker; Cable Television Laboratories Inc. for technology; Insight for consumer marketing; National Cable Communications Inc. for advertising; Time Warner Cable's news operation for local programming; Comcast Cares Day for community service; Cablevision Systems Corp.'s Power To Learn initiative for education; and Real Networks Inc.'s SuperPass for new media.

This group follows 2001's award winners: Mediacom Communications Corp. for business strategy; former Charter Communications Inc. CEO Jerald Kent for image maker; Cox Communications Inc. for consumer marketing; CN8: The Comcast Network for local programming; USA Media Group for technology; AT&T Broadband's Atlanta system for community service; and AT&T Broadband of San Rafael, Calif. for education.

They join an array of companies — Greater Rochester Cablevision, Century Communications Inc. and Buford Televison, among them — and individuals, with names like Hindery, Beales and Roberts — which Cablevision had honored since 1989.

All of these honorees have left their imprimatur on the industry, not only during the year they were recognized, but through a legacy that continues to evolve and will affect different cable constituencies for years to come.

In this special report, Multichannel News details the reasons why this year's Innovators were lauded. We invite you to see for yourself over the next few pages.
