Adelphia's On An HDTV Roll

Adelphia Communications Corp. announced a series of HDTV content and technology deals last week, as the MSO pursues a more aggressive new-services agenda.
Adelphia said it will launch HDNet's two high-definition channels in multiple markets, and said it would expand its deployment of BigBand Networks Inc.'s Broadband Multimedia Router and Terayon Communication Systems Inc.'s DM 6400 Network CherryPicker.
"HDTV is taking hold with consumers, and HDNet on Adelphia will underscore our commitment to rebuilding the company, upgrading our network and offering customers more cutting edge digital-video entertainment services," said Judy Meyka, Adelphia's senior vice president of programming, who last week joined HDNet founder Mark Cuban on a National Association of Television Program Executives convention panel session on VOD and HDTV.
Meyka said Adelphia planned to be aggressive on rolling out HDTV, as well as VOD and DVRs in 2004.
Adelphia joins HDNet's growing list of MSO affiliates, which encompasses Time Warner Cable, Insight Communications, Charter Communications, as well as DirecTV and EchoStar. HDNet also announced the premiere of Hollywood HD, a new original entertainment news series that debuted last week, and is hosted by Wendy Walsh and David Doerre.
BigBand said Adelphia expanded the rollout of its BMR to 23 systems across the country serving 1.5 million cable subscribers. "BigBand HDTV enables us to rapidly launch and scale high definition offerings to our subscribers," Doug Ike, vice president of advanced digital services in Adelphia, said in a statement.
The BMR allows Adelphia to control HD and standard-definition feeds across multiple channels and deploy bit rate adaptation to maximize channel capacity.
Terayon said its CherryPicker has been deployed in more than 40 Adelphia headends, principally in the Northeast, Central and Southeast divisions. The DM 6400 allows Adelphia to deliver three HD programs in a single channel via rate shaping technology. Adelphia also is using Terayon's CP 7585 terrestrial 8-VSB HD receivers, which pick up local TV stations HDTV feeds, then inserts them into the DM 6400 for grooming and rate shaping. The CherryPicker also handles the same duties for the HDTV feeds from cable programming networks. HD is available to about half of Adelphia's subscriber base.
