Court TV N.Y. Appeal Begins

Court TV’s efforts to bring cameras into New York State trial courts continued Wednesday.
Oral arguments took place in the New York State Appellate Division in the network’s suit against the state -- the first time a media organization has sued for the sole purpose of ending a statewide ban against cameras in courts, Court TV said.
“State court judges should have the discretion in New York, as they do in most states, to grant the electronic media the same right to cover trials as the print media," Court TV chairman and CEO Henry Schleiff said in a prepared statement.
“Through this lawsuit, Court TV is seeking to provide the public with greater access to one of the hallmarks of democracy -- our judicial system,” he added.
According to the network, all 50 states currently allow cameras at least in appellate proceedings, but New York is one of nine states that do not allow cameras in trial courts.
The suit was originally filed Sept. 5, 2001, in Supreme Court, New York County, but the state’s high court ruled against the network, setting up the current appeal.
