Nortel, Motorola Team Up on VoIP

Motorola Broadband Communications Sector and Nortel Networks are creating a product duet, teaming up to provide an integrated voice-over-Internet-protocol system to speed the technology's entry into the cable market.
The two companies -- which already worked together on a VoIP project for Callahan Associates International LLC's 'ish' cable operation in Germany -- hope to simplify deployment of VoIP among network operators.
The nonexclusive agreement joins Motorola's IP cable-access technology with Nortel's voice and data services to create a complete, pretested, standards-compliant VoIP system.
Nortel brings a line of VoIP products -- including soft switches, gateways and servers -- to deliver voice.
Motorola will supply its multimedia-terminal adapter and customer-premises equipment, including modems and cable-modem-termination systems.
''By providing an integrated solution from back office to switch to access network, Motorola and Nortel Networks will be the first to deliver a complete VoIP solution as a commercial product for broadband-network operators,' said Bruce Swail, vice president and general manager of Motorola Broadband's telephony business, in a prepared statement.
Nortel and Motorola will share coordinated sales and support duties, including network planning, design and implementation.
