Cable Positive Announces POP Nominees

Cable Positive Tuesday announced the nominees for its “Third Annual Positively Outstanding Programming Awards.”
The POP Awards recognize and honor exceptional original HIV/AIDS-related cable programming. This year’s ceremony will be Tuesday, June 22 at the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York.
The nominees:
• Outstanding Biographical Program: A Walk in Your Shoes: AIDS, The N; Biography: Elizabeth Taylor: Facets, A&E Network; Mandela: Journey to Freedom, Discovery Times Channel; and The Naked Truth 2, Black Entertainment Television.
• Outstanding Documentary: Fight for Your Right: The Social History of HIV, MTV: Music Television; Gene Hunters: HIV Nairobi, Discovery Science Channel; Pandemic: Facing AIDS,Home Box Office; To Live Is Better than to Die, HBO; and What’s Going On, Showtime.
• Outstanding News Coverage: Southern Blues: The Truth About AIDS in the South, BET; VH1 News Presents: AIDS: A Pop Culture History, VH1; and World AIDS Day Newscast 2003, BET.
• Outstanding News Magazine: High Price of Fame: Out, E! Entertainment Television; Reality Matter: Deadly Desires, Discovery Health Channel; and Second Look: Women That Are HIV Positive, Style.
• Outstanding Original Film/Movie: Angels in America, HBO; Behind the Red Door, Showtime; and Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story, Lifetime Television.
• Outstanding Original Series: Queer as Folk, episode 310, Showtime; and Queer as Folk, episode 311, Showtime.
• Outstanding Public Service Announcement: “Fight for Your Rights: Protect Yourself -- Sexual Health,” MTV; “Rap It Up,” BET; and “Ten Reasons to Test for HIV/AIDS,” VH1.
• Outstanding Special Programming: 106 & Park: World AIDS Day Special, BET; Nelson Mandela: A Staying Alive Special, MTV; and Open Mic: HIV Testing, BET.
• POP Network of the Year: BET, HBO, MTV, Showtime and VH1.
Cable Positive also said it is presenting an award for “Outstanding Community Partnership” for the first time.
The nominees: AIDS Help and Comcast Corp. (Key West, Fla.); AIDS Network and Charter Communications Inc. (Madison, Wis.); AIDS Task Force and Comcast (Fort Wayne, Ind.); Dubuque Regional AIDS Coalition and Mediacom Communications Corp. (Dubuque, Iowa); and Northwest Connecticut AIDS Project, Cablevision Systems Corp. and Charter (Litchfield, Conn.).
