CableLabs OKs Digital-Ready TV Sets

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 6/10/2004 1:13:00 PM

Cable Television Laboratories Inc. has approved TV sets from Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America Inc., Philips Consumer Electronics and Thomson Consumer Electronics, plus one other unnamed manufacturer, in its latest Joint Test Suite verification program for one-way, CableCARD, digital-cable-ready TV sets.

"It’s exciting to see the manufacturers moving so aggressively to hit the market with these new DCR products,” CableLabs CEO Richard Green said in a prepared statement. “We’re anticipating that these new high-definition televisions with advanced display technologies, combined with the CableCARD interface that enables premium digital programming without a set-top box, will be one of the hot new consumer products this holiday season.”

Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics USA Inc. and Sony Electronics Corp. were previously verified under the test suite, and Panasonic Consumer Electronics and Samsung Electronics America Inc. have been certified under CableLabs’ OpenCable testing program.

CableLabs said Samsung was certified for its third digital-cable-ready set in the latest wave.
