FCC Cable Fees Going Up 24.5%

By Ted Hearn -- Multichannel News, 7/27/2003 4:42:00 PM

Cable's annual regulatory fees to help run the Federal Communications Commission are going up 24.5% this year.

That's more than 11 times the annual inflation rate, according to the Consumer Price Index for June released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Congress requires the FCC to recover a large portion of operating budget from regulated industries.

On Friday, the FCC said cable operators were expected to pay 66 cents per subscriber this year, compared with 53 cents the year before.

Earlier this month, the FCC released a survey showing that nominal cable rates climbed 8.2% for the 12-month period ending June 30, 2002, or about five times greater than the inflation rate.
