No Debate: Fox News Wins

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/15/2004 11:33:00 AM

Fox News Channel made it a clean Nielsen Media Research sweep with its presidential-debate coverage, attracting more than 1 million viewers than Cable News Network and MSNBC combined for the third contest between President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) Wednesday night.

Fox News averaged 6.94 million viewers from 9 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Oct. 13, compared with 3.72 million for CNN and just under 2.1 million for MSNBC, according to Nielsen data.

It was more of the same among key adult demos, although Fox News held a narrower margin.

Among adults 18-49, Fox News totaled 2.46 million watchers, versus 1.79 million and 845,000 for CNN and MSNBC, respectively. Among the 25-54 set, CNN attracted 1.81 million watchers, while MSNBC had 976,000. For its part, Fox News garnered 2.98 million.

As for the networks’ post-debate analysis from 10:30 p.m.-11 p.m., CNN built its audience to 3.8 million total viewers, while Fox News (6.32 million) and MSNBC (1.67 million) both lost some watchers from their debate coverage.
