Level 3, PanAmSat Create Hybrid Network

In a marriage of earth and sky, Level 3 Communications Inc. and PanAmSat Corp. have forged an agreement to create a hybrid long-haul network for transmitting television signals and Internet data to MSOs and other network providers.
Under the deal, PanAmSat will use Broomfield, Colo.-based Level 3's fiber-optic network to link to video and data customers, including cable operators and Internet-service providers in several U.S. markets.
That will allow PanAmSat to consolidate its six existing terrestrial teleport hubs, and it will allow the satellite provider's customers better access to the network from any of Level 3's 70 points of presence in the United States and Europe.
For customers not located near the terrestrial hubs, this eliminates the need to use the satellites to link into the network.
"This agreement with Level 3 represents the next step in the evolution of our network," PanAmSat president and CEO Joe Wright said.
"This relationship uniting the leading fiber-optic network with PanAmSat's existing global satellite and terrestrial infrastructure will allow us to truly maximize the power of both satellites and fiber, resulting in an efficient, reliable delivery network," he added.
