Restraining Order Keeps Viacom Services on Dish

At the request of Viacom Inc., a judge extended a restraining order Thursday to ensure that the programmer’s CBS stations -- which carry the Super Bowl Feb. 1 -- stay on EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite service.
U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilkin had actually issued the restraining order last Friday at the request of EchoStar, and it barred Viacom from pulling its CBS stations and cable networks off Dish. A hearing on the preliminary injunction had been set for this Friday on the matter.
But Thursday, Wilkin delayed the hearing until after the Super Bowl -- Feb. 27 -- and extended the restraining order until March 3, all at Viacom’s request.
"We are confident in our legal position," Viacom said in a prepared statement Thursday. "However, we continue to believe this is a dispute that belongs at the negotiating table, not the courtroom, and the extension we requested will ensure that no football fan is denied the opportunity to watch the Super Bowl on CBS."
