Shooting Begins on Sci Fi's Riverworld

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 11/27/2001 12:27:00 PM

Principal photography began last week in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sci Fi Channel original movie Riverworld.

The two-hour film -- based on the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning series of five novels by author Philip Jose Farmer -- is slated to premiere on the network in mid-2002.

Sci Fi plans to air the movie as a back-door series pilot.

Riverworld is being produced by Alliance Atlantic with Tasman Films and Box TV. Filmmaker Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) is serving as executive producer.

The movie explores the afterlife, where every person from every era has been reborn young and healthy.

Among them is the male lead, astronaut Jeff Hale, portrayed by Brad Johnson (Always, Soldier of Fortune), who, after dying on a space mission, has awakened along the banks of the seemingly endless river.
