Broadcom Corp. said it plans to increase its presence in the personal-video-recorder silicon sector by integrating two cable and satellite set-top-box chip technologies with NDS Group plc's PVR software and conditional-access system.
Broadcom said its new family of set-top chips will integrate 'Random Access Scrambled-Stream Protocol' (RASP) -- a technology that enables PVRs to fast-forward, pause and rewind encrypted content saved to a local hard disk -- with NDS' 'XTV' software. NDS is pushing XTV as a standard for set-tops with on-board PVR capabilities.
Broadcom's second integrated technology, 'Integrated Conditional Access Module,' is currently supported by NDS' 'Videoguard' conditional-access system, which fosters password protection, customer spending limits and parental controls for pay TV applications.
'By adding hardware support for NDS' XTV and RASP technologies into our next-generation set-top-box chips, we are optimizing our chips for the rapidly emerging market for interactive PVR applications,' said Rich Nelson, senior director of marketing for Broadcom's broadband-communications business unit, in a press release.
Broadcom said its 'BCM93730 Advanced Home Gateway Set-Top Box Reference Design' currently supports XTV, RASP and NDS smart cards.
