Comcast Corp.'s investment subsidiary dialed up Internet-protocol voice with an investment in an IP-telephony start-up.
Comcast Interactive Capital has made a strategic investment in Cedar Point Communications as part of a $19 million first funding round. The exact amount of the investment was not released. Lead investors in the funding round were Charles River Ventures and Battery Ventures.
Cedar Point has been hitting the market with an IP-multimedia technology that funnels voice-control functions into an all-in-one switch unit.
Based on PacketCable technology, the 'SAFARI C3' media-switching system is in trails with Comcast at its Philadelphia test labs, and it will soon begin a field trial with MetroCast Cablevision, an MSO serving 90,000 homes in Belmont and Rochester, N.H., and Sanford, Maine.
'We are very impressed by the rapid progress that the company has made in bringing the unique integrated architecture of the SAFARI C3 platform to fruition,' CIC managing director Samuel Schwartz said in a release. 'We believe Cedar Point can play a significant role in the new exciting market of cable IP telephony.'
