SA Lays Off 1,300 in Mexico
Atlanta— In another sign of a struggling cable-gear market, Scientific-Atlanta Inc. has cut a production shift at its Juarez, Mexico, facility, eliminating about 1,300 jobs.
The layoffs affect about 30 percent of the Juarez workforce. And it may not be the last cut, as S-A is evaluating whether it needs to make further changes due to reduced demand for its products.
Sci Fi to Run 'Dead Zone' Episodes
New York—Sci Fi Channel will telecast episodes of sister service USA Network's Dead Zone beginning July 12, according to sources.
The quasi-repurposing deal — through which Sci Fi will not show Dead Zone episodes days after their premiere on USA, but rather begin with the series' debut installment — marks the first time a cable channel has aired another network's series during its initial run, sources said. The June 16 premiere of Dead Zone, based on a Stephen King novel, set a record for an original series bow with a 4.7 household rating.
Charter Execs Continue Stock Buys
St. Louis— Charter Communications Inc. executives continued their buying spree last week, as five more officers and directors disclosed that they had purchased shares in the past month.
According to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday, Charter COO Dave Barford, senior vice presidents David McCall, William Schreffler and Christian Fenger and director John Tory purchased a total of 26,300 shares of Charter stock. In another filing, director William Savoy revealed that he had purchased $2.5 million worth of Charter's 5.75 percent convertible notes on June 26.
The moves come on the heels a filing earlier in the week which disclosed that Charter chairman Paul Allen purchased 5 million shares of the MSO's stock for $20 million on June 27 and June 28.
