New York-MetroChannels, the three regional networks that service the New York DMA, will be moving more toward entertainment, rather than informational-based programming, with new shows slated and new on-air packaging.
During the next six months, MetroChannels will premiere more than one-dozen original series dealing with art, entertainment, sports and cultural events.
The changes-the first initiatives implemented by former Discovery Networks U.S. executive Greg Moyer, who is now president of regional programming for Rainbow Media Holdings Inc.-include renaming the MetroGuide channel "Metro" effective today (April 3). During the summer, MetroLearning will also get a makeover. And by fall, Metro Traffic & Weather will have a new look, as well.
Metro's new series will include: Rhythm and Dues, a weekly performance series; Subway Q & A; and Buzzcut, a top-of-the-hour newsbreak featuring updates on metro entertainment.
On Tuesday (April 4), Metro also plans to debut "TVNY," a primetime Tuesday-through-Thursday block of classic New York-based series, including Brooklyn Bridge and Car 54, Where Are You?
Bethpage, N.Y.-American Movie Classics used this past April Fool' s weekend to kick off its new weekend "Three Stooges" program block, "NYUK-New Yuk University of Knuckleheads," which will feature-film shorts from the slapstick meisters, hosted by actor Leslie Nielsen.
Every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., AMC will air a two-hour block of six film shorts starring the comic trio.
New York-USA Network is spinning off a series from its original movie, The Huntress, which premiered March 7. Annette O' Toole will reprise her role as real-life character Dottie Thorson, who became a bounty hunter along with her daughter.
