Cox Brings HDTV to Las Vegas

Cox Communications Inc. announced Monday that it has launched its second high-definition-television market, Las Vegas.
This marks the first time Cox has commercially deployed integrated HDTV set-top boxes in digital-cable boxes. The MSO previously launched HDTV using sidecars in Omaha, Neb.
Cox digital-cable customers in Las Vegas who lease integrated HDTV receivers can access up to seven HDTV channels: local digital-broadcast feeds from CBS and PBS affiliates; two HDTV feeds of Home Box Office; two HDTV feeds from Showtime Networks Inc.; and Discovery High Definition Theater.
Discovery HD carries a monthly subscription fee of $5. HDTV feeds from HBO and Showtime are included in the monthly multiplex subscriptions from the respective premium-movie services.
In its press release, Cox noted that direct-broadcast satellite competitors do not offer local broadcast stations in HDTV. EchoStar Communications Corp. does carry a national CBS feed in HDTV, but only to subscribers in qualifying DMAs.
