BigBand Integrates QAMs

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 12/2/2002 11:05:00 AM

Redwood City, Calif.-based BigBand Networks Inc. has introduced its "BigBand VOD Edge" product, which integrates dense quadrature amplitude modulation and RF upconversion inside its "Broadband Multimedia Service Router."

Each port on the device does QAM modulation and upconversion for four 6-megahertz channels, BigBand said, which means the company can drive 128 channels of QAM per chassis.

"BigBand VOD Edge provides a platform for VOD [video-on-demand] services that cable operators will not outgrow or be forced to reinvest in," BigBand president and CEO Amir Bassan-Eskenazi said.

The company said the new VOD Edge device can support all levels of VOD, subscription VOD, FOD (free on-demand), long-form advertising and network digital-video recording, and it is interoperable with all current server vendors.

BigBand said its digital broadcast equipment has been deployed by Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications Inc. and Rogers Communications Inc., among others, reaching 3 million digital homes.
