Black Entertainment Television, the Black AIDS Institute and the Kaiser Family Foundation have launched the new "Rap-It-Up/Black AIDS Short Subject (Rap-It-Up/BASS) Film Competition," they announced Wednesday.
The competition is open to all races and ethnicities, but submissions must address the issue of HIV/AIDS in African-American communities.
Two winners will be selected to receive up to $25,000 from BET to produce their short films. The winning films will be televised on BET sometime around World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), and they will also be submitted to independent-film festivals around the world.
The early submission date is March 1, and the submission deadline is March 30. Finalists will be announced June 1, with winners to follow June 27.
"African Americans account for the most people estimated to be living with AIDS and for more AIDS-related deaths than any other ethnic group in the United States," BET executive vice president of marketing and communications Kelli Richardson Lawson said in a release.
"Because of these disturbing statistics, it is imperative that BET leverages its corporate partnerships and resources to combat this deadly disease," she added.
