In Demand Is CloseTo WNBA Package

By R. THOMAS UMSTEAD -- Multichannel News, 4/2/2000 8:00:00 PM

On the heels of its precedent-setting professional-sports out-of-market package deals, In Demand is negotiating with the National Basketball Association for the rights to distribute its Women' s National Basketball Association pay-per-view package this summer.

Sources close to the situation said In Demand is close to securing a multiyear rights agreement for 65 WNBA games per year. Currently, only direct-broadcast satellite services have access to the package.

The out-of-market telecasts would complement national and local broadcasts of the games through ESPN, Lifetime Television and NBC.

In Demand representatives would not comment on the matter, and NBA officials could not be reached for comment.

The package would most likely only be offered to digital-cable households, and it would retail at $49.

If a deal is reached, it would be the fourth pro-sports out-of-market package that In Demand has secured for the industry, following "NBA League Pass," the National Hockey League' s "NHL Center Ice" and Major League Soccer' s "MLS Shootout."
