CableLabs Approves 1st DOCSIS 2.0 Gear

By Matt Stump -- Multichannel News, 12/19/2002 11:15:00 AM

Motorola Broadband Communications Sector, Scientific-Atlanta Inc., Terayon Communication Systems Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and Xrosstech Inc. all came up big winners in Cable Television Laboratories Inc.'s first certification wave for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 2.0 cable modems and cable-modem-termination systems, as each company received approval for its 2.0 modems.

Terayon also received certification for its DOCSIS 2.0 CMTS.

CableLabs also certified 21 DOCSIS 1.1 modems and three 1.1 CMTS products.
The DOCSIS 2.0 certification will pave the way for operators to deploy new services next year. DOCSIS 2.0 offers speeds up to 600 times faster than dial-up modems, CableLabs said. And with upstream speeds improved by a factor of six over DOCSIS 1.0 gear, MSOs are looking to offer peer-to-peer and tiered business services.

CableLabs said DOCSIS 2.0 is compatible with previous DOCSIS iterations. "This is another historic moment for our industry," CableLabs president and CEO Richard Green said in a prepared statement.

The 21 modems were from 15 different manufacturers that received 1.1 certification: Ambit Microsystems Corp., Arris, Askey Computer Corp., Broadxent Inc., Com21 Inc., Kinpo Electronics Inc., LinkSys Group Inc., Motorola, NetGear Inc., Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc., S-A, Terayon, TI, Thomson Consumer Electronics and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc.

DOCSIS 1.1 CMTS certifications went to S-A, Arris and Cisco Systems Inc.

Efficient Networks Inc., SMC Networks Inc., Thomson and Toshiba also received DOCSIS 1.0 modem certification.

CableLabs ran the DOCSIS 2.0-certification wave alongside testing for PacketCable and CableHome, the results of which will be released Dec. 20.
