BET Nets Cox Carriage Pact
Washington D.C. — On the heels of its renewal with Comcast Corp. through a broad MTVN distribution deal (see page 25), Black Entertainment Television announced Friday it has secured a long-term carriage deal with Cox Communications Inc.
The deal, which runs through 2009, includes distribution for BET and sister service BET Jazz to Cox's 6.3 million subscribers, said the network.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
At presstime, BET was still negotiating a renewal deal with Time Warner Cable.
EU Gives OK To NBC-VUE Deal
Brussels, Belgium— The $14 billion merger of General Electric Co.'s NBC television unit and Vivendi Universal Entertainment cleared its first regulatory hurdle last Friday, winning approval from the European Union. Because the merger has little impact on the European market, the EU used a simplified procedure that clears mergers and acquisitions after one month if no third parties object.
The deal, which would combine the NBC broadcast network, CNBC, Bravo, MSNBC and Telemundo with USA Network, Sci Fi Channel, Trio, Universal movie studio and theme parks, is still under regulatory review in the U.S.
The deal is expected to close some time in the first half of 2004.
Houston Sports Startup Taps Former TBS Exec
Houston— Former Turner Broadcasting System Inc. executive Kevin Gaffney will head up the upstart Houston Regional Sports Network.
Gaffney, previously a senior vice president of Turner's Eastern Division, will serve as president and CEO position of the regional, which is set to launch in the fall of 2005 with games from the National Basketball Association's Houston Rockets. The network also expects to air Houston Astros Major League Baseball games in 2006.
