Excite@Home to Cease Operations

By Karen Brown -- Multichannel News, 12/5/2001 2:00:00 AM MT

With all of its affiliate cable operators now planning to leave Excite@Home Corp.'s network, the troubled cable-modem service announced late Tuesday that it will cease operations after Feb. 28.

Affiliated cable operators -- including Cox Communications Inc., Comcast Corp., Insight Communications Co. Inc., Rogers Cable Inc., Mediacom Communications Corp. and MidContinent Communications -- have signed three-month operating contracts that will pay Excite@Home a total of $355 million up front.

The contracts insure that the Excite@Home network and provisioning will continue through Feb. 28.

After that, Excite@Home will cease operations.

It is not clear whether the Redwood City, Calif.-based company will still proceed with its Chapter 11 bankruptcy or change the status to a Chapter 7 liquidation.

Excite@Home spokeswoman Estella Mendoza said the company could not comment on that issue.

It is possible for the company to liquidate under Chapter 11. That is often sought so that company officials can direct, with court approval, the distribution of assets.

In contrast, under Chapter 7, an impartial trustee is appointed to oversee the auction and distribution of assets.

The interim-service agreements are still subject to bankruptcy court approval, and a hearing has been set Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in San Francisco.
