Comcast Media Center To Launch MPEG-4 VOD Service

Will Distribute On-Demand Content Through SES Americom’s IP-Prime Service

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/23/2008 6:15:00 AM

Comcast Media Center plans to distribute video-on-demand content in MPEG-4 format through SES Americom’s telco-oriented IP-Prime service, pending a definitive agreement between the two companies.

CMC currently offers an MPEG-2 VOD service with more than 8,000 programming assets to cable operators nationwide.

“Extending our VOD capabilities to include MPEG-4 transport allows television programming networks and other content providers to reach their MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 distributors ‘all from The Center,’” Gary Traver, CMC’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement. “We look forward to making this new service available via SES Americom’s IP-PRIME service.”

IP-Prime is a turnkey IPTV solution that features 45 high-definition and 260 standard-definition channels. SES Americom has signed agreements for IP-Prime with 35 telcos based in 22 states.
