Entourage star Adrian Grenier’s documentary about his quest to find his biological father, Shot in the Dark, will debut June 3 on HBO.
The documentary, a personal filmmaking project by Grenier, will bow immediately after the third-season finale of Entourage. The special will also be seen on Father’s Day, June 17, at 6:30 p.m.
Raised in New York by his mother, Karesse, Grenier grew up without really knowing his biological father, but just before his 23rd birthday, he resolved to reconnect with him. After talking with a wide array of fathers and sons -- from strangers he met outside Yankee Stadium to past and present suitors of his mother -- Grenier decided to meet his dad, an Ohio resident named John. Following a series of sometimes-awkward phone calls, John finally agreed to meet Grenier at the home of John’s parents in Ohio.
Grenier explored this sensitive subject by interviewing people along the way, visiting his father's relatives and later standing face-to-face with John for their first in-person talk in almost 20 years.
The discussion shed light on why John and Karesse separated after Grenier was born. With a newfound sense of self, Grenier talked with his mother again about the circumstances that led to his parents’ estrangement, and then reunited with his father once again.
Along with on-the-road footage and interviews with friends, family, acquaintances and strangers, Shot in the Dark uses the paintings of Janet Morgan Mol to illuminate certain scenes.
