Even as negotiations between striking TV scribes and studios are resuming, the Writers Guild of America East has demonstrations scheduled in Manhattan, and across the globe, this week.
The WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers were scheduled to be back at the bargaining table at 10 a.m. Pacific Time Monday in California, the first time they will be back formally talking since negotiations broke down Nov. 4. The next day, the strike began.
As the strike enters its fourth week, the WGA East said it is holding what it calls a Solidarity Rally Tuesday “to thank the thousands of union members from every industry who have joined us on the picket lines from New York to Los Angeles and stood with us to preserve decent working standards against corporate power.”
The WGA East said is expects almost 1,000 people to show up for its rally at noon at Washington Square Park in Manhattan. Members of the WGA West, the Screen Actors Guild, the United Federation of Teachers, the Service Employees International Union, UNITE-HERE, the national and New York State AFL-CIOs and the New York City Labor Council are expected to attend.
In addition, the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds has proclaimed Wednesday an International Day of Solidarity, according to the WGA East. Demonstrations of solidarity will take place in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, English and French Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico and France, according to the WGA East.
Also on Wednesday, the WGA East will picket for a second time in front of the Time Warner Center /Time Warner Studios at Columbus Circle in Manhattan.
